A severe tragedy struck the heart of Rome when 22-year-old rope access worker Andrea Moretti lost his life in a fatal workplace accident inside the historic Colosseum. The young specialist, certified for high-altitude rope work, fell approximately ten meters around midnight while installing the amphitheater’s new lighting system. The incident occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday. Despite an immediate alarm raised by his colleagues and swift intervention from 118 emergency medical staff, nothing could be done to save the young worker, who reportedly died on impact before he could be transferred to a hospital. Carabinieri, the medical examiner, the duty prosecutor, and inspectors from the local labor inspectorate and ASL Spresal rushed to the scene to conduct investigations and determine the exact circumstances of the accident. The Rome Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an official investigation, overseen by a team of magistrates coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Giovanni Conzo. The news has sent shockwaves of grief and dismay through the cultural and institutional community. Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli expressed profound sorrow, calling the incident "a tragic event that leaves us stunned and dismayed," and extending deepest condolences to Andrea’s family over the "absurd death of a young man committed to his work." In mourning, the Archaeological Park temporarily closed the second-tier sector where the accident took place for the rest of Wednesday.
