With the harvest well underway, it's time to begin the season of international guides and rankings. Turning the spotlight on Italy is James Suckling’s "Top 100 Wines of Italy 2026", with this edition crowning the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino vintage as one of the "best of the last two decades, with wines that are distinguished by their impressive structure, freshness, and balance". It is no coincidence that the top wine on the list is the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino from Eredi Fuligni, overseen by Roberto Guerrini, one of the area's most historic wineries. San Filippo's 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere comes in at No. 2 in a "Top 10" that also includes at No. 7, the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino by Giodo, the winery owned by Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s most acclaimed winemakers, and his daughter Bianca. On the podium, at number 3, is Roberto Voerzio's 2022 Barolo Brunate, one of the finest names in the Langhe. The ranking, as James Suckling (whose Italian winemaker is Aldo Fiordelli) points out, is based not only on the wine's scores, but also on price and market availability.
