A well-oiled operation active for over four years, relying on micro-cameras, micro-earpieces, and customized clothing to illegally pass the theoretical driving test, has been uncovered by the Verona local police in collaboration with the traffic police. The breakthrough came at the end of a complex investigation coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office and launched back in 2022.
It all began when a candidate was caught at the Verona Motorization Office with hidden electronic devices designed to receive quiz answers remotely. From there, investigations snowballed through phone record analysis, SIM cards registered to non-existent identities, and seized equipment across various northern cities, including Bologna, Vicenza, and Reggio Emilia. The criminal ring managed every detail: from recruiting candidates and supplying gear to accompanying them to exam sites and laundering proceeds. The illegal service cost between €2,000 and €3,000 per person.
The operation yielded €40,000 in cash, dozens of tech gadgets, and administrative fines exceeding €10,000. In total, 41 individuals were indicted for illicitly substituting candidates during public exams, and 27 driving licenses obtained fraudulently were confiscated by order of the public prosecutor.
