A coffee at the counter before running to work, a newspaper on the table, a conversation with the neighbors: the bar is the vibrating heart of the Italian way of life, but it is in grave danger of extinction. According to Confesercenti's examination of Chambers of Commerce data, a remarkable 24,073 enterprises in the sector closed between 2019 and 2025. A 14.2% reduction - equating to an average of almost four thousand businesses lost each year, or eleven shut down every single day - has a significant impact on both small towns and neighborhoods in large cities. The closure map shows extensive wounds, particularly in the center (-20.8%), followed by the northeast and northwest. In absolute terms, Lombardy recorded the largest decline, while the sharpest percentage drop was seen in the Marche region. Even Rome has experienced a fall of more than 30% as a result of the neighborhood bar sector crisis, which is not mitigated by visitor flows. The combination of declining purchasing power, the impact of smart working, and the lethal mix of rising energy prices, raw material costs, and labor costs is having a severe effect on retailers. The total cost to local communities has exceeded €7.2 billion over six years in lost consumption and jobs.
