AstraZeneca, a worldwide biopharmaceutical corporation, will invest €66 million in Italy over three years for clinical research and innovation. The state's industrial R&D fund will provide €20 million. The investment will provide funding for 71 new clinical trials in more than 200 Italian research centers and healthcare facilities. The proposal is being implemented amid Europe's decline in biopharmaceutical research. AstraZeneca, an Anglo-Swedish corporation headquartered at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in Cambridge, reports that the European portion of global investment decreased from 43% to 31% between 1990 and 2020. According to the company's vice president, Ruud Dobber, Italy was picked because of its high quality of clinical research, but Europe "is falling behind". More funding, faster access to novel medications, more efficient procedures, and consistent research incentives are required.
