Italy has the highest proportion of companies hit by ransomware, the viruses that lock systems and demand a ransom. 49.5% of Italian businesses surveyed in a Rubrik Zero Labs study had experienced an attack in the previous year, which was higher than the global average of 39% and the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) average of 40%. In Italy, 87% of impacted organizations chose to pay for the locked computers, which is higher than the global average of 82%. Attacks on corporate networks are also becoming more critical as a result of artificial intelligence. Anthropic's mid-September analysis demonstrated how criminals are increasingly employing generative software to create viruses that change in real time, dodging standard countermeasures. According to Rubrik Zero Labs statistics, 73% of payments made in Italy were prompted by data extortion threats (exfiltration and data disclosure), compared to 53% globally.
