The NBA is preparing to enter Europe. The American basketball league could launch NBA Europe by the end of 2027, with the goal of creating an elite tournament capable of establishing its brand in Europe. According to The Athletic, the NBA is already in advanced talks with many of the continent's best soccer clubs. In Copenhagen, where the top officials of European soccer are convening, NBA deputy chairman Mark Tatum and George Aivazoglou, the league's executive responsible for Europe and the Middle East, gathered with executives from AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid. The potential is especially appealing to AC Milan and PSG, which, unlike the other clubs, do not currently have a basketball team. The proposal might thereby establish a fresh link between European soccer and the NBA. NBA Europe is scheduled to debut with 16 teams and a system that falls somewhere between two models. Some clubs would be guaranteed a slot, as is the case with NBA franchises, while others would gain entry through on-court performance, in keeping with European athletic heritage. The cities under consideration are London, Manchester, Madrid, Istanbul, and Athens. The idea has the potential to change European basketball as it currently exists. Next week, the clubs of the EuroLeague, the continent's premier club competition, will gather in Italy to discuss the NBA's plan to acquire the competition and merge it with the new league.
