Studying, preparing for exams and raising a child at the same time is a complex challenge in a country such as Italy, historically associated with the central importance of the family but now facing a sharp demographic decline. Against this backdrop, the University of Catania has chosen to engage with a tangible measure: the Board of Directors of the Sicilian university has approved the creation of a contribution for student parents, which gives a 50% refund of tuition fees paid by enrolled parents. The project was launched in response to a strong push from student representatives and is aimed at mothers and fathers of minor or dependent children who have achieved at least 12 academic credits (CFU), a criterion designed to encourage true academic continuity. Rector Enrico Foti called the effort a gesture of inclusivity, highlighting the university community's desire to support young families. The proposal intends to develop a modern paradigm of co-responsibility, acknowledging for the first time the equal role of fathers inside the University.
