Giotto's Bell Tower, a Gothic masterpiece and emblem of the Florentine skyline, is about to undergo an unprecedented renovation. For the first time in its existence, the monument will be fully renovated, both inside and out. The project is expected to last about five years and will cost more than €7 million, with the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore covering the entire cost. To facilitate the conservation work, an 86-metre-high engineering scaffolding structure was completed in just over four months. The construction was meant to have minimal visual impact while allowing tourists to continue appreciating the monument. The work will progressively descend from the top to the ground, gradually revealing the surfaces restored in various phases throughout the years. The restoration is especially noted for its ecological sensitivity. Since the mid-2000s, a pair of peregrine falcons have lived among the Duomo's monuments. As the installation of the scaffolding coincided with the birds’ breeding season, photographic monitoring of the tower’s 149 putlog holes was carried out, identifying a female nesting on the western side. To prevent the birds from being disturbed during this delicate phase, scaffolding erection work was rescheduled in conjunction with industry experts. This strategy allowed for a successful hatching and the delivery of three chicks, which were able to finish their growth and take flight in total safety.
