From an urban trend isolated to major cities to a general presence across the country. Data compiled by Unioncamere and InfoCamere supports the success of street food in Italy: as of March 31, 2026, 1,975 municipalities have at least one street food shop, a 57% growth compared to ten years ago (717 new municipalities were surveyed). Today, more than one in four Italian municipalities has a business in the sector. The data illustrate exponential growth: enterprises have expanded from 2,271 to 4,286 (+88.7%). Southern Italy dominates the sector, accounting for about half of the enterprises, with experience tourism and culinary promotion driving the growth. While Lombardy remains the leading region (544 firms), Sicily (514), Puglia (510), Lazio (371), and Campania (361) follow closely behind. At the city level, Rome (129 businesses) has overcome Milan (128), establishing itself as the capital of the industry. Although sole proprietorships continue to be the most prevalent format (73.7%), the sector is undergoing a structural transformation. In the past decade, joint-stock companies have experienced a nearly 500% increase in growth, rising from 4.6% to 14.5% of the total, demonstrating a new capacity to attract investment.
