Millions of travelers will find it easier to get from the city to the airport: by the end of 2026, two main Italian airports will be train-accessible. The first is Bergamo Orio al Serio, where the new Bergamo-Airport line will begin operation in December. The double-track line, which is approximately 5.3 kilometers long, will allow direct trains to Milan Central Station in about an hour. A shuttle service, similar to the subway, is also proposed between Bergamo and the airport, with trains every 10 minutes and a travel time of eight minutes. The other significant project is a connection to Venice's Marco Polo Airport, which will cost around €644 million. The Ministry plans to make it operational by Christmas 2026, with direct trains from Venice, Padua, Vicenza, and Verona. The south is likewise moving forward. Work on around 8 km of new rail and a station serving the Salento airport began this year in Brindisi and is expected to be completed by 2029. The cost is €161 million. In Sicily, the "Vincenzo Florio Airport" station on the Trapani–Marsala line is currently under construction. This will combine train and plane travel into a single, more sustainable and comfortable journey that is free of traffic and parking.
