Artificial Intelligence's year zero in Italian schools has just commenced: the Ministry of Education has declared the experimental phase complete and issued guidelines for the systematic integration of this technology into the classroom. Additionally, it has allocated over €200 million, with half of the funds designated for teacher training. At the same time, students have demonstrated that they are more advanced and faster than the system that is supposed to dictate the pace of their education. In high school, up to 80% of students utilize chatbots in their studies; however, only one in six students have received official instructions or guidelines from the school on how to use them, or has been trained or encouraged by teachers to use them critically and constructively. The situation has been assessed by the “Youth and Work” Observatory of Skuola.net and Gi Edu — the division of Gi Group that builds practical connections between schools, universities, ITS higher technical institutes and the labour market — which surveyed 2,500 upper-secondary students towards the end of the last school year to examine the relationship between the technology shaping the future of work and younger generations.
