Italian soccer has found an unexpected solution to the crisis that has gripped the FIGC, or Italian Football Federation, for weeks. The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), the body overseeing Italian sport, has decided to place the federation under administration and appoint Giovanni Malagò as extraordinary commissioner. The decision stems from the failure to register Malagò as a FIGC member at the time of his election as president last June. The issue had prompted a dispute between the Federation and CONI, which in recent weeks had escalated to the possibility of the president being removed. On Tuesday, Malagò and CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio convened prior to the Board meeting, which marked a significant breakthrough. The agreement prevented a conflict, as the Board and, subsequently, the CONI National Council unanimously approved the administration and Malagò’s appointment, with Buonfiglio describing him as a "victim of a malfunction". The commissioner will now have to shepherd the FIGC toward new elections, which must be held by January 31, 2027. The initial suggested date is December 14, and Malagò, who previously served as the Federation's commissioner, may seek reelection as president. "I feel more responsible", Malagò stated following the vote. "It was a difficult and embarrassing experience, but that's life".
