Italy is the global leader in cruise ship production and the most prominent country in Europe. It is responsible for 57% of global orders through 2039 and 54.4% of the value of ships ordered. This is the result of the efforts of 451 shipbuilding businesses. Over half of the new cruise ships scheduled for delivery globally through 2039 will be built by Fincantieri (56%, plus 1% from the Genoa-based T Mariotti shipyard), ahead of both Germany's Meyer Werft, which accounts for 19%, and France's Chantiers de l'Atlantique (14%). The remaining 10% of production is distributed among other countries worldwide. According to Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, the Italian shipbuilding sector has a diverse network of specialized suppliers and services. The core sector, which produces ships and floating structures, contributes for approximately 36% of the supply chain's total added value, or €1.7 billion out of €4.8 billion. Around the core, the report notes, a large and diverse supply chain emerges, creating nearly €3 billion in additional value. This encompasses planning, design, engineering, R&D, information and communication technology, materials (steel, aluminum, fiberglass), and advanced components including propulsion, electrical and electronic systems, and equipment.
