Opera San Francesco in Milan, which has been open since 1959, welcomed 29,000 visitors from 144 countries last year, and its soup kitchens served 2,500 meals every day. The Franciscan friars have chosen to take their philanthropic activities to the next level by handing over those in need of smartphones. They explain their gesture as follows: "We recognize the risk that AI may create divides, and we all know that a poor person does not survive without a smartphone. Nobody exists in this world without an internet connection. That is why, last year alone, we handed 282 smartphones and 122 SIM cards to our guests: the only way we can keep the poor connected and ensure they get a meal, a shower, medical examinations, or interviews. Technology isn't a monster; it can make your life easier, but without a phone and an internet connection, you cannot receive prescriptions from your doctor or respond to a job offer".
