Between 2021 and 2025, more than 129,000 Italians aged between 18 and 39 returned to Italy and re-established their residence after a period abroad. This figure has consistently climbed over the years: for every 100 cross-border transfers, returns increased from 26 in the five-year period 2011-2015 to 31 in the following five-year period, and 40 in the previous five years. The average age at return is 29.6. But this does not mean the end of the young migration. According to ISTAT data, there were still 109,000 Italians expatriating in 2025, with 56,000 returning home. By the end of the year, there were 6.6 million Italians living overseas. The phenomenon, therefore, remains essentially asymmetric: Italy is regaining some of those individuals who left the country, but it continues to lose a significant number of others.
