Italian students' preferred study-abroad destinations are changing. While the United States lags, China surges ahead. This is the outcome of an Ipsos-Doxa survey, as reported by the newspaper Italia Ioggi. Analyzing the opinions of 500 Italian students aged 14 to 19, who participated in annual mobility programs with Intercultura, it is clear that interest in China is increasing dramatically. Compared to 2017, when 29% of students regarded China as an appropriate destination for a study abroad, the percentage has increased to 45% today. In contrast, like in a system of communication vessels, the proportion of young people keen to study in the United States has fallen from 84% to 72%. What features have made China increasingly appealing to Italian students? 45% of the sample is impressed by technological innovation, 41% by the lifestyle, and 44% by the opportunity Beijing provides for access to emerging markets and technologies. Those who are "very interested" in China are largely high school students aged 14 and 15 (28% of the sample), but the appeal to the Chinese language appears to be cross-cutting: the percentage of those who want to study the basics has climbed to 63%. The country's overall image has improved. Positive opinions have risen from 54% in 2017 to 88% as of now.
