As of October 6, Venice cemeteries allow people to bury their pets alongside their own grave or that of a deceased loved one. They include dogs, cats, bunnies, and birds. "Animals are now an essential component of our families. I believe we should be able to bury animals alongside the deceased", said Paolino D'Anna, Councilor for Citizen Services. In Veneto, it is currently legal to bury pets on your own property; certain municipalities have built "pet cemeteries." Before Venice, only Belluno allowed pets to be buried inside conventional cemeteries. The ordinance specifies that burial is reserved for pets or companion animals. As a result, all garden animals classified as farm animals (by national legislation), such as horses, goats, and sheep, are excluded. In addition to dogs and cats, ferrets, domestic rabbits, domestic rodents such as guinea pigs and hamsters, pet birds, ornamental fish, turtles, small reptiles, and amphibians can all be buried. Burial is reserved for animals that belonged to the deceased.
