The Bishop of Palermo, Corrado Lorefice, has decided that First Communion and Confirmation must be held on the same day. The elimination of the double ceremony and its accompanying double celebration is driven by pastoral concerns, but it is also a method to assist the thousands of disadvantaged families that incur debt for the double celebration. Nevertheless, the decision is not without consequence: the earnings of restaurateurs, florists, photographers, pastry chefs, and other small businesses are also reduced by half if religious ceremonies are divided. In fact, they took to the streets in Palermo to protest. They say they have lost €20 million, and that may well be true: but it also means that someone else has saved that money.
