Italy’s publishing industry is making strides abroad while also regaining momentum at home. In 2025, 8,645 contracts were made for the sale of translation rights for Italian novels overseas, the largest number ever recorded by the Italian Publishers Association since its foundation in 2001. Italian books were translated into 45 languages and distributed in 64 countries, with children's and young adult titles, fiction, and nonfiction generating the most demand. Europe is the dominant destination market, followed by Asia, demonstrating Italian publishing's growing ability to establish itself on the worldwide stage. While exports are breaking records, there are also encouraging indicators on the domestic front. After a 1.2% decline in overall sales in 2025, the trade market rebounded in the first nine months of 2026: turnover of fiction and nonfiction sold in bookstores, online, and large-scale retail outlets increased by 3.2%, exceeding €1 billion, while copies sold increased by 2.6%. The €60 million library incentive has boosted public demand for books, which is aiding the recovery. Physical bookstores are notably growing, with sales increasing by 6.2% and strengthening their market position. The most dynamic genres include comics (+14.9%), children's and young adult books (+9.1%), and fiction, both international (+6.9%) and Italian (+4.9%). These data demonstrate the vitality of an industry capable of exporting a rising number of stories throughout the world while also witnessing renewed growth at home.
