Italy solidifies its leadership role in the global healthcare landscape, confirming its place among Europe's most virtuous countries for organ donation and transplantation. The Transplant 2026 Newsletter, issued by the Council of Europe in partnership with the Spanish National Transplant Organization, describes a system of clinical and organizational excellence capable of competing with leading worldwide organizations. With 30.9 deceased donors per million inhabitants in 2025, Italy ranked second among major European countries, trailing only Spain and ahead of France (28.7), the United Kingdom (20.7), and Germany (11.7). Of the 1,827 donors identified in Italy, at least one organ was retrieved for transplantation in 1,760 cases. The Italian healthcare system is the most prominent in the European Union in terms of the number of liver and heart transplants performed in a single year, with 1,753 and 451 transplants, respectively. Additionally, it holds the EU record for cornea donations with 11,642 procedures. A significant contributor to this success is the expansion of non-cardiac donation (DCD) programs, which constituted 25% of the national total in 2025. The report's release corresponds with the updating of the Council of Europe's recommendations on human tissue safety, a clinical standard to which the network of Italian transplant hospitals provides cutting-edge protocols. The findings support the efficacy of a program based on extensive medical expertise, complete coordination, and a broad culture of giving.
