Civita di Bagnoregio and Bolsena will be the Italian Capitals of Contemporary Art in 2028. The winning concept is the collaborative project "Art that Comes, Art that Goes", which won one million euros to carry out the objectives stated in the dossier. The two villages in the Tuscia area of the province of Viterbo are connected to different landscapes and histories. Civita di Bagnoregio is a small town perched on a volcanic spur that can only be reached by foot by a pedestrian bridge; it is also notable for its fragile topography. On the other hand, Bolsena is distinguished by a medieval historic center that is situated around the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara fortress and overlooks Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The project's goal is to establish modern art as a permanent presence that can engage with the landscape and local tradition well after 2028. "Not as an event to be consumed, but as a permanent cultural infrastructure", stated Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, explaining the jury's reasoning. Mayors Luca Profili and Andrea Di Sorte stressed that one of the goals is to provide chances for younger generations without forcing them to leave the community. The announcement was made at the Ministry of Culture, following the review of the five finalist dossiers. Capri competed with "The Sirens of the New," Padua with "I Still Learn. Exercises in Dissident", and Pozzuoli with "The City of Creative Fragilities". The panel unanimously chose the Tuscia initiative, which combines creative promotion to institutional collaboration and the provision of long-term spaces and opportunities.
