The Vatican is putting an end to fraud, abuse, and scandals linked to the proliferation of fake orders of chivalry. In a statement issued by the Secretariat of State, the Holy See has put an end to "misunderstandings" created by the "illegal release of documents and the improper use of sacred places", firmly distancing itself from the market of fake honorific titles and defending individuals in good faith. The position of the ecclesiastical authorities is unequivocal: the only recognized orders that directly pertain to the Pope are five: the Supreme Order of Christ, the Order of the Golden Spur, the Order of Piano, the Order of St. Gregory the Great, and the Order of Pope St. Sylvester. These are joined exclusively by the Order of Malta and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, which the Holy See "recognises and protects", specifying that it has no intention of "introducing changes in this regard" by recognising additional organisations.
