The GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme), a project in which Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan are developing the next-generation fighter, currently has a headquarters in Turin. The facility has been opened by Edgewing, the equally owned joint venture between Italy’s Leonardo, Britain’s BAE Systems and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. (JAIEC), and it is located next to Leonardo’s facilities. In 2025, Edgewing was established as the industrial lead for the program on behalf of the three countries and serves as the design authority for the new aircraft. Early in 2026, it executed contracts with the GCAP Agency, the joint government body of the three nations, totaling more than six billion euros. The new headquarters will provide thousands of high-skilled engineering jobs in Piedmont. Turin is the first national headquarters to go operational, following the joint headquarters of Edgewing and the GCAP Agency, which opened last year in Reading, UK. The British and Japanese centers will follow, with each acting as the program's national engineering hub. In the Piedmont capital, engineers from all three countries will be employed; initially, they will be seconded by partner companies. Some families will relocate directly from Japan.
