The Regional Administrative Court of Lazio has dismissed Meta’s legal challenge against Italy's regulations regarding fair compensation for publishers over the online use of journalistic content. According to the judges, the mandated compensation and platform obligations represent a coherent and proportionate extension of the European Copyright Directive. Under the framework, platforms cannot penalize publishers by reducing content visibility during negotiations and must supply necessary data to calculate appropriate remuneration. If talks break down, either party can ask Communications Authority (AGCOM) to set the fee. The Italian Federation of Newspaper Publishers (FIEG) welcomed the ruling as a crucial step toward a balanced digital marketplace that honors professional journalism.
