The Democratic Party's national assembly unanimously approved the extension of the secretary's term in the event that the natural expiration date falls within a general election year, with only one vote against and one abstention in the remote vote. This move essentially extends Elly Schlein's leadership of the party beyond the initial term date of March 12, 2027. The secretary addressed any concerns regarding her political future during the opening of the meeting in Rome, stating, "I am prepared to lead this community and lead it as a candidate for Prime Minister, with or without primaries". She intends to pursue this campaign in a pluralistic and collaborative manner with the leadership team, promoting a new vision of leadership in the country. Looking ahead to the next elections, Schlein reaffirmed the aim of success and the importance of first developing a unified program that connects with citizens, followed by resolving the question of coalition leadership. The secretary delineated the procedures for selecting the leader of the progressive alliance: primaries, which are described as a democratic celebration that the party does not fear and does not consider divisive, or an agreement based on the individual with the most support. "I am here", she concluded, "ready, determined and proud to lead this extraordinary community".
