The history of Italian Americans "is a story of courage", and "the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States' independence is also an opportunity to recognize the contributions made by Italian Americans to the founding and success of this great nation". Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made this statement in a video message that was transmitted during the NIAF Gala, which commemorated the 51st anniversary of the National Italian American Foundation, the largest Italian American organization in Washington. "The history of Italian Americans is, ultimately, the history of America itself: a nation shaped by courage, sacrifice, and the unwavering hope that a better life is possible", Meloni stated. "For more than 50 years, NIAF has served as a vital link between Italy and the United States, based on shared history, family ties, culture, and ideals. In this time of crisis, the relationship between Italy and the United States remains important. We must continue to defend freedom and democracy", she said. The prime minister also addressed Columbus Day, which commemorates Christopher Columbus' arrival in America, claiming that "forces seek to divide us, rewrite our history, and destroy the traditions we share. They call it ‘woke culture’. They want to erase our culture". According to the Prime Minister, "They are mistaken. Trying to wipe out Columbus Day is an attempt to erase Italian Americans' foundational history and deny them the place they have worked so hard to achieve in the fabric of our nation. We won't let them. Columbus Day is here to stay".
