For the past four months, Massimiliano Accetturo, 56, a cultivator from Rocchetta Sant'Antonio in the province of Foggia, has been using his horse Maja to get around. Not on a whim, but because the rising expense of gasoline keeps him from driving. And while continuing to ride his horse, he arrived at the Candela expressway exit, where truckers and farmers have been protesting the exorbitant price of diesel for the past week. Accetturo, a father of two university-aged children, decided to join the mobilization to raise awareness of the challenges faced by those who must drive many kilometres to work every day. His work as a gardener takes him between homes, businesses and plots of land, often with the necessary equipment. However, rising fuel costs have made accepting new jobs increasingly difficult. "I was forced to say no to many jobs because I had to travel by car to work and in the end, it was no longer convenient for me", he said. He also sent an appeal to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from the protest site in Candela, reminding her that he voted for her. "I am also a father with two children at university. Give us a hand; we can't take it anymore". The request, Accetturo emphasizes, is not to obtain privileges, but to be able to continue working without the expenses of travel absorbing an unsustainable portion of the earnings. "We are only asking to be able to work and live with dignity".
