Prince Vitaliano Borromeo Arese, president of Kaleon and a leading figure in Italian entrepreneurship, has died at the age of 66. He was the heir to one of Italy's oldest dynasties, the same as St. Charles Borromeo, the sixteenth-century archbishop of Milan. His family owns many properties on Lake Maggiore, notably Isola Bella and Isola Madre, in the Borromean Islands archipelago, which is about an hour from Milan and a popular destination for American tourists. The relationship with the United States was also personal: he was born in Milan in 1960 and a Bocconi graduate who started his career in the steel industry in the United States. Back in Italy, he had dedicated himself to making the family fortune lucrative as a true entrepreneur, rather than as a typical aristocrat. Under his guidance, Kaleon purchased Villa Pallavicino Park, reopened the Castles of Cannero, and took over management of the Castle of Vogogna. The company was listed on the stock exchange in December 2025, which is unusual for a cultural tourism enterprise associated with a noble family. One local commentator described him as the prince who transformed the Borromeo Lands into a tourism industry capable of attracting millions of visitors. For eleven years, he also served as patron of the Collegio Borromeo in Pavia, Italy's oldest university college of merit, founded by San Carlo in 1561. He leaves behind his wife, Marina Munafò, and their two sons, Giberto and Lodovico.
