They live and assist faith communities and participatory processes throughout Italy, with a presence in nearly every diocese (216 out of 226). They are the 2,944 priests with foreign citizenship registered in the clergy support system and recorded in the XXXV Immigration Report 2026 by Caritas Italiana and Fondazione Migrantes, presented in Rome, which provides an in-depth analysis of the contribution of ethnic Catholic communities to the country's ecclesial and social life. 36.8% of the priests are from Africa, and 26.2% from Asia. The diocese of Rome alone receives 311 of them (or 10.6% of the total), followed by the dioceses of Florence (76), the Apostolic Exarchate for the Ukrainian faithful (70), Milan (59), Naples (58), and Turin (57). According to the census of non-Italian apostolic personnel, there are roughly 29,500 religious residency permits, with Rome accounting for more than 61% of the total. The Report describes the Filipino, Ukrainian, Latin American, and African Catholic communities as "places of sociality and oases of hope", capable of boosting neighborhood life and even reviving abandoned churches.
