The former Mameli Barracks, a ten-hectare facility located between the Niguarda and Bicocca areas of Milan, is undergoing renovations. For decades, it served as the historic headquarters for the legendary 3rd Bersaglieri Regiment, one of the Italian Army's most distinguished corps. During the 2026 Urban Regeneration Forum, which was organized by the City Council, the construction site was made accessible to the public in order to showcase a project that will restore over 100,000 square meters of previously inaccessible urban space. A 3.5-hectare public park created by landscape architect Francesco Garofalo's Openfabric firm will serve as the project's focal point. 385 additional trees are proposed, resulting in an estimated 41% increase in tree coverage. At the request of the Superintendency, the six historic barracks that overlook the parade ground will be preserved and fully restored. The plan allocates half of the residences to social housing, with approximately 800 beds in subsidized student housing. The surrounding wall will be mostly dismantled, making the area accessible on foot. Environmental remediation works will be completed by 2027, following which construction will begin, with the project expected to take at least six years to complete.
