About 1.4 million drivers have lied to their insurance company. This information comes from an insurance fraud survey conducted by the EMG research institute and commissioned by Facile.it, a company that compares, promotes, and brokers insurance, financial products, electricity, gas, fiber optics, and long-term vehicle rental rates. The survey, which was conducted on a representative sample of the Italian population, discovered that the top reason for lying was to avoid having to pay more for vehicle insurance. According to projections, approximately 770,000 drivers (53.5%) acknowledged that they had fabricated information regarding the circumstances of an accident in order to prevent a lower rating. Another example was that 43% of the sample interviewed, or around 586,000 policyholders, claimed they lied to their insurance company since the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was not covered by their car insurance policy. Finally, around 33,000 (2.3%) admitted to lying about the circumstances of the accident in order to receive a refund that they were not entitled to because the damage was not covered by the policy.
