"The power of religions is important". These are the opening lines of President Sergio Mattarella's eloquent message to the Community of Sant'Egidio on the occasion of the historic international peace gathering in Assisi. The Head of State underscored how faith and the spiritual dimension can inspire thought and action, serving as concrete examples of conversation, respect for difference, and solidarity—all of which are critical for fostering trust and guaranteeing global cohesion and security. Mattarella's message then broadens to include a discussion of individual and community responsibility in the context of a society weakened by international wars and recent street violence. In this circumstance, the President is decisive: "Inertia is unjustifiable". Mattarella reminded everyone that wars, injustice, poverty, and persecution are solely "human products", and urged everyone to do their part. While governments and institutions bear primary responsibility for reconstructing law, equity, and freedom, "no one is exempt from contributing. Every woman and man can use their passion to help create a peaceful world". The Umbrian gathering is especially significant as it commemorates the 40th anniversary of John Paul II's first historic gathering. An event that Mattarella refers to as "prophetic," in which he expresses gratitude to the Community of Sant'Egidio for maintaining the spirit of dialog during the years when the will to power exerted its oppressive influence.
