Pirelli launched the 2027 Calendar, named "India", on October 23 in New Delhi. The calendar includes 36 photographs by Sølve Sundsbø, Raghu Rai, and Avani Rai. It is the first time The Cal has been created by three photographers working together. The issue was developed in the shadow of a farewell: Raghu Rai, 83, a maestro of Indian photojournalism, committed the final three months of his life to the project before dying on April 26, 2026, and his daughter Avani finished the job. The calendar, shot from May to September, is divided into two sections: 18 photos by Sundsbø and 18 from the Raghu and Avani Rai project. Sundsbø, who previously produced the 2026 edition, featured nine women with ties to India, including Padma Lakshmi and Freida Pinto. Meanwhile, Rai depicted a more intimate and colorful India, with flower marketplaces and busy lanes. This is a sixty-year tradition: Pirelli's British subsidiary has been publishing the calendar since 1964, and it is printed in a limited edition of roughly 20,000 copies every year that are not for sale. It began as a company gift and has now evolved into a cult item among collectors, artists, and celebrities. Among its historic accomplishments, Sarah Moon was the first female photographer to photograph it in 1972, and the 2016 edition was the first to feature unretouched images. Including years when publication was suspended, 53 editions were produced between 1964 and 2027, featuring 43 photographers.
