"The risk, sometimes acknowledged by big tech companies themselves, is that" artificial intelligence and the development of machine-learning models could lead to a loss of control over technological processes. The need is to reduce increasingly ferocious rivalry among a small number of players, with consequences that science cannot now predict. If we were to merely observe the expansion of computational power in all directions, the fundamental principles of the centrality of human life and our democracy could be compromised". Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic, said these words at the opening ceremony of the 5th Festival of the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, titled "The Future Has Passed Here - the Regions as Protagonists of a World in Constant Movement", held in Florence's Salone dei Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio. "It is already evident today," the Head of State stated, "that the manipulation of information, including the dissemination of fake news using the power of the internet, can influence public opinion, shaping its orientations and choices, not only on a commercial level—a phenomenon that is a widespread part of everyday life".
