Cultural participation in Italy is surging, hitting its highest point since 2014. While book and newspaper readership remains flat - and cultural tourism stays highly concentrated in major hubs - visits to museums, monuments, and archaeological sites are booming. According to Istat’s 2026 Fair and Sustainable Well-being Report, which tracks the evolution of Italy's quality of life, 40% of people aged six and older engaged in at least two cultural activities outside the home in 2025. This metric includes trips to the cinema, theater, museums, exhibitions, archaeological sites, monuments, and concerts. Participation is slightly higher among women (41.1%) than men (38.9%) and peaks among younger demographics. However, a significant education gap persists: 68.7% of those with a college degree participated in at least two cultural activities, compared to just 14.5% of those with a middle school education or less. The report specifically highlights a massive rebound for Italy's museum heritage. In 2025, visitor numbers to museums, archaeological sites, and monuments jumped 30.5% compared to 2022, and 8.4% compared to 2019, officially surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
