The new National Archives Portal was unveiled in Rome at the Ministry of Culture. By providing a unified access point to the holdings of state, public, and private archives, this integrated digital environment enables the investigation of documents, images, and stories found in Italian archives. The portal replaces the old National Archives System, which was introduced in 2011 but is now obsolete. Searches can be initiated by a variety of entities, including documentary heritage, organizations, families, individuals, preservation sites, and research tools. It is also designed for non-specialists, with themed itineraries that bring together different sources ranging from music to architecture, as well as Ancestors, which focuses on registry and family history research. Access is free, however certain resources require digital identity verification.
