Even in the birthplace of fine food and la dolce vita, American holidays are beginning to have an impact on the high cost of living: in 2026, celebrating Halloween in Italy will cost an average of 9.6% more than the previous year. The National Federconsumatori Observatory paints a picture of inflation affecting both costumes and the country’s culinary traditions. While costumes are still important—with a rise in ancient costumes inspired by the Odyssey and a 35% increase in rental fees in Milan—it's the sweets that are truly alarming. The traditional "trick or treat?" is putting extra strain on Italian families' wallets, with candy and chocolates up 25% and 24%, respectively. To avoid the exorbitant pricing, Italians are rethinking the holiday in their own distinct way: DIY, house parties, and themed dinners in which the famous pumpkin meets the creativity of our cuisine are all the rage. A Halloween with a typical Italian twist, mixing the urge to have fun with the art of changing yourself in order to save money.
