Italian President Sergio Mattarella delivered a scathing rebuke of anti-vaccine ideology, describing anti-vax positions as "incomprehensible," "irrational," and "baffling." His remarks came on the heels of a controversial parliamentary decision to reinstate unvaccinated doctors who had been suspended from hospitals during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Appearing in clear contrast with the government's direction, the Head of State took a firm stand against the growing anti-scientific current making inroads into political discourse. Addressing an audience that included Health Minister Orazio Schillaci, University Minister Annamaria Bernini, and leading cancer researchers, Mattarella emphasized the vital role of medical science.
"Scientific research saves human lives, in ever-increasing numbers," Mattarella said. Yet, he noted with concern that some continue to disseminate "irrational beliefs and destructive misinformation" that lock a segment of the population in fear. Calling the knee-jerk opposition to vaccines "one of the most baffling symptoms" of this trend, the President underscored the urgent need to protect public health decisions from ideological distortion.
