Studying in prison: the case of Italy and Spain

Italy and Spain have similar histories and policies regarding the prison system, however, they have a very different approach to university study in prison. On the one hand, Spain has implemented measures that led her to become an example in Europe. On the other hand, Italy is unable to generate systemic consequences despite the unique experience of the University Penitentiary networks. There is a clear difference which emerges from a comparative analysis conducted by Gerardo Pastore, researcher from the Department of Political Science at the University of Pisa. The study that was recently published on "International Journal of Inclusive Education" is part of a long-term collaboration with Andrea Borghini, delegate of the rector of the University of Pisa for the University Penitentiary network of Pisa, and Antonio Viedma Rojas of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid. "The first datum recorded from the quantitative point of view is related to people's participation in university courses and on this point, Italy's delay is particularly marked although it is not easy to frame the phenomenon in a comparative key. The data tells us, for example, that in 2015 there were 178 members out of a prison population of about 52,000 in Italy and 1,020 out of about 61,000 inmates in Spain". "These are good practices that would be advantageous to adapt to the Italian context" concludes Pastore.
