(9 April 2019) The photo exhibition "Letizia Battaglia: Palermo" will be inaugurated on Saturday, April 27th at the San Paolo IMS. The event was organised in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of San Paolo. Since the beginning of her career, in 1971, the work of Letizia Battaglia remains closely linked to the city of Palermo. As a photo editor at the newspaper L'Ora, starting in 1974, she has documented the conflicts that devastated the city in the 1970s and 1980s, the most violent era of the "Mafia war". Her best-known photographs show extremely intense, sometimes brutal images. Battaglia also represented the life of the poor neighbourhoods of Palermo, the political movements, the adoption of new social behaviors, producing images that became iconic. She has always looked at photography as a tool for social intervention and documentation. This is combined with an extraordinary expressive force that marks her images and makes her one of the most important names in European photography of her generation.
