(3 September 2018) The Italian Institute of Culture Pretoria, in collaboration with Art Week Joburg, presents Blind Drawing, a seminar by the Italian artist Marta Roberti. This workshop - scheduled in Johannesburg at the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens tomorrow until September 6th - is open to artists and non-artists. Blind Drawing proposes a challenge for the participants, creating the conditions for the rapid transition from the use of the dominant left brain hemisphere (responsible for the analytical and verbal functions) to the activation of the right brain hemisphere (which performs visual functions and is able to perceive and create images). Marta Roberti developed exercises inspired by the techniques of Betty Edwards, an artistic professional who explored the relationship between the right hemisphere and the ability to draw. Moreover, Roberti has integrated these exercises with yoga breathing practices that slow down the breathing rhythm to reach a certain mental state. Thus the act of drawing becomes a meditative practice.
