(21 settembre 2018) Enea and Cineca have won an international competition to build a supercomputer for European research on nuclear fusion in Italy, capable of performing 8 million operations per second (8 Pflops) thanks to the latest generation of processors. For five years starting from 2019, the two Italian institutions will provide high performance computing (HPC) and data storage services for the European Fusion Energy Development Consortium (EUROfusion) and will manage the supercomputer installed at CINECA for the numerical simulation of thermonuclear plasma physics and the structural analysis of advanced materials for energy applications. ENEA, point of contact of the project and a member of EUROfusion, will manage HPC services and application support to users of the consortium, while CINECA will provide the supercomputer, a partition of the main Italian research computer MARCONI, equipped with a peak power of 16 Pflops placing it in 18th place among the 500 most powerful computers in the world.
