The average age of cars on Italian roads continues to grow, reaching 12 and a half years. This data comes from a study conducted by Facile.it, a company that operates as a comparison, promotion, and brokerage site for insurance, financial products, electricity, gas, fiber optics, and long-term car rental rates. The study was based on a sample of over 12 million car insurance quotes (the total amount the policyholder pays the company for coverage) collected in the previous year. The negative implications of aging vehicles on the road are numerous. While it is obvious that as a vehicle ages, routine and unusual maintenance costs and fuel consumption rise, few people realize that the price of auto insurance is also affected by its age. For example, if the average car insurance premium for a 10-year-old car is €461, it jumps to €559 for a 12-year-old vehicle and to €575 for a 14-year-old vehicle; in just four years, the price has increased by 25%. Another conclusion is that there is a greater demand for roadside assistance: according to Facile.it data, in April 2026, 56% of those who picked an additional coverage when purchasing their third-party liability insurance policy chose roadside assistance, compared to 39% in 2024. The data clearly shows how rapidly the Italian car fleet is aging.
