Italians are still consuming too much salt compared to the limits recommended by the World Health Organization. According to research released during World Salt Awareness Week, only one in six people stays within the advised daily intake of 5 grams. Men consume an average of 9.3 grams of salt per day - almost double the recommended amount - while women average 7.1 grams. Although consumption has gradually declined over the past decade, levels remain well above what health experts consider safe. Italy’s National Institute of Health warns that reducing salt intake is essential for preventing hypertension and lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease. Studies have also linked excessive sodium consumption to kidney disease, osteoporosis, and certain forms of cancer. Health experts recommend replacing salt with herbs, spices, garlic, and citrus fruits when cooking. Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, checking nutrition labels carefully, and avoiding adding salt at the table are also among the key recommendations.
