Truck drivers' demonstrations in Southern Italy have impacted one of the most well-known Made in Italy products: Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP. The distribution of finished products and the delivery of milk to factories have been impeded by transport blockades and steadily increasing diesel prices. According to industry estimates, losses totaled almost €3 million in just 24 hours. In a single day, roughly a million liters of buffalo milk remained untreated. The problem is particularly problematic because production standards require milk to be processed within 60 hours following milking. The situation shows the vulnerability of Italy's food supply systems in the face of escalating logistical costs. In 2025, the production of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP reached 58,000 tons, with approximately 37% of it being exported. Thus, a product that serves as a representation of Italy's culinary heritage illustrates the extent to which its competitiveness is contingent upon effective transportation.
