Professors Roberto Barbuti, Roberta Gori, and Paolo Milazzo from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Pisa won the "Theoretical Result of the Year" award awarded by the International Membrane Computing Society, thanks to the study "Multiset Patterns and Their Application to Dynamic Causalities in Membrane Systems ". The International Membrane Computing Society (IMCS) is an international association made up of researchers who deal with "Membrane Computing" - a calculation model developed in the early 2000s. The "Membrane Computing" paradigm, inspired by biological models, has found innumerable applications in various scientific fields, from information technology to biology and medicine. Every year the IMCS awards three prizes: "The PhD Thesis of the Year", "The Theoretical Result of the Year", and "The Application of the Year".
