Archaeology, Antonio Favores <br> excavations in the city of Herod

(12 february 2019) 2019 marks the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Italian archaeological mission in Caesarea Marittima, today in Israel, started in 1959 on the initiative of the Italian diplomatic authorities in Israel and entrusted to the direction of Antonio Frova and made possible thanks to the involvement of the Municipality of Milan and other institutions of the city. The six excavation campaigns ended in 1964, highlighting the Roman theatre of Caesarea, built by Herod the Great in the twenties of the first century BCEand subsequently renovated and utilised until the Byzantine era. The Italian mission also contributed to the reconstruction project of the building which in those years was once again used for performances.  In addition to the theatre, Italian archaeologists' research extended to the city walls, the aqueduct and to a thermal plant from late antiquity. On February 14th, at the Italian Institute of Culture in Tel Aviv, the archaeologist Antonio Dell'Acqua will give a lecture on the topic.
