Japanese and Italian Fashion Culture, <br> Kimonomania exhibition

(1 marzo 2019) ”Kimonomania: young Italian designers pay tribute to Kimono" is the title of the exhibition that will be open to the public from March 8 to 14th at the Italian Institute of Culture in Tokyo, under the auspices of Ice. It is a spin-off of the previous exhibition at the museum of the Castle of Santa Severa in 2017, and at the museum of the Church of San Carlo, in Modena, in 2018. The exhibition, curated by Stefano Dominella, underlines the influence that Japanese culture has had on Italian fashion, starting from the journey of Hasekura Tsunenaga, an emblematic figure, the first Japanese samurai-ambassador who, in 1615, arrived in Italy via the port of Civitavecchia, an important arena for cultural exchanges and was hosted in the Castle of Santa Severa. The exhibition traces the suggestion that the culture of the Rising Sun exerts on young creativity made in Italy and beyond. The exhibition underlines not only the complex phenomenon that was Japonism, but also the interweaving of different cultures that gave rise to socio-economic and customary phenomena.
