Refugees / Sant'Egidio: New arrivals from Ethiopia through humanitarian corridors

Addis Ababa - 97 refugees from the Horn of Africa arrived in Rome on a regular flight of Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa, thanks to the humanitarian corridors promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Italian Episcopal Conference in collaboration with the Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs. The 97 individuals, mostly of Eritrean and Somali nationality, had been refugees in Ethiopia for some time and were partly referred by family members or friends already in Italy, some of whom had arrived earlier through humanitarian corridors. Some family units will therefore be welcomed by relatives, ensuring easier and faster integration into our country, while others will find hospitality in homes provided by the support network of civil society, which enables this widespread reception in eight Italian regions (Lazio, Abruzzo, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Sicily, Tuscany), and will be initiated into an integration path: for minors through immediate school enrollment, for adults through Italian language learning, and once refugee status is obtained, integration into the workforce.
